The “Big Freeze” May Have Affected Your System

The country experienced the coldest temperatures for twenty years during the period of the first half of January. With temperatures dropping to minus 22c in parts of Scotland and accumulated snowfall of 40-60 cm in some parts of the country, January will not only be remembered for the severity of the cold but also for the gridlock caused by the “Big Freeze” as Britain's infrastructure was put to the test.

Just as you would prepare your car or commercial vehicle to be reliable during the severe winter conditions you also need to perform maintenance checks on your CCTV system.

Whilst any quality CCTV system should be able to stand up to the rigours of our British weather, the recent low temperatures may have pushed some installations to the limit!

Do you have washers and wipers on your cameras? Once the thaw has set in try them both - is there a squirt of water? How well does the wiper work? Very low temperatures may make the water in the washer bottle and pipes freeze, the bottle may split, pipes may pop off under pressure. If the wipers have been tried while it's freezing they may now have damaged rubbers.

Secure Engineering Tip: a one-to-one mix of concentrated screenwash and water will not freeze at usual winter temperatures below zero degrees commonly encountered in the UK.

On older PTZ cameras the flexible conduit may already be brittle in the cold and icy conditions. Once the conduit is cracked, moisture may get inside affecting connectors, camera electronics and the lens.

The Pelco Esprit and the Ganz C-Allview – no flexible conduit to worry about.

Maybe it's time to replace your old PTZ camera with an integrated unit like the Pelco Esprit or the Ganz CAllView.

Over 100 cameras now for a major client in East Anglia

BBV's Pick-a-Point System

One of Secure's longstanding clients based in East Anglia continues to enhance security at their key warehouse and distribution centre. From an initial 58 cameras installed in 2006, the site now has over 100 cameras covering both internal and external areas. Using twisted-pair connectivity for ease of future expansion, with localised power supply and signal distribution hubs, seven high spec Dedicated Micros DS2s record all cameras continuously. The DVRs are networked so our client's main Security Control and senior management can monitor that site and all their other sites using BBV's supremely flexible Pick-a- Point GUI-based control system.

In order to keep track of this ever-expanding site, schematics and site layouts are kept up-to-date by Secure's in-house CAD department using the very latest AutoDesk CAD tools.

Introducing Sue Grout, Secure's Operations Manager

Our Operations Manager, Sue Grout's role is to plan the working week so that it runs smoothly, providing maximum customer service with a fixed number of engineering teams within a fixed number of days. Typically on a busy day with many emergent calls coming into the office, Sue may have to re-organise the daily schedule a number of times for a number of teams, with minimum disruption to any prior scheduled work. Sue says, “It can be a challenging job and certainly the most rewarding especially when it all comes to fruition and we have achieved total customer satisfaction.”

Secure's New Recruit

This is a busy time of year for weather-related callouts. Hence Secure Engineering has taken on a new recruit with just the right credentials; always a welcoming smile, properly dressed in Secure Engineering uniform and never budges from his position by reception. We expect our new recruit to stay for just a week or two but he's welcome back next year, weather permitting! Oh and his favourite food is 'icebergers'.

New Products

FTP backup – rarely used but can deliver cost-effective benefits

Using a proven DVR with the application of an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) back-up system, Secure has given a Tonbridge area client great peace of mind, knowing that recordings on their DVR are being continuously backedup on a separate hard drive at a remote location.

The FTP service on the flexible DM DS2 DVR can be configured to operate in a variety of ways to suit the demands of the local network and pop-up messages on the local monitor keep you informed as to the FTP status. For remote DVR systems the latest generation of DM DV-IP servers also offer FTP facilities.

Access Control

A major central London client has called upon Secure Engineering's expertise once again. This time it is to fix their on-going entry system problems. Using tried-andtrusted Paxton Access equipment, our engineers have installed Paxton's PC-based Net2 entry systems with card readers and integrated video entry intercoms.

With their in-depth knowledge of both CCTV and Access Control systems our engineers are able to create a level of integration to enhance your security and save you time and money!

Comprehensive System Maintenance at “The Bridge”

The Bridge Main Control Room with integrated
CCTV, ANPR and Intercom systems

Every six months a team of Secure Engineers descends on the The Bridge, Dartford. The 264-acre site situated next to the QE2 bridge represents the most advanced regeneration scheme in the Thames Gateway, comprising of the Science Park, business space, distribution centre and housing. Taking about 10 man-days to complete the task, our engineers work through every part of the CCTV and intercom system. This includes 62 CCTV cameras, 14 ANPR cameras, 48 intercoms, 7 DVRs and two complete control rooms with BBV Pick-a-Point systems. Integration between the systems means that numerous functions have to be checked as the engineers progress around the site stretching from Dartford town centre to Bluewater. Once the maintenance system checks, cleaning and remedial repairs are completed, a copy of the completed 9 page checklist is forwarded to our client ACIS for their records. As some parts of the system were deemed “critical” a comprehensive set of spares is held on site. This enables our engineers to effect repairs within a very short timescale.
