CCTV FACTS

  • LEGISLATION & GUIDANCE

  • The UK has 1% of the world's population and 20% of the world's CCTV cameras

  • The first CCTV camera in the UK was installed at Guy's Hospital, London,
    in 1949

  • A year long trial of ANPR technology by 23 police forces resulted in 13,000 arrests - an arrest rate nine times higher than the police national average. £8M worth of drugs and property were seized. The Government has now pledged an additional £15M of funding to develop and roll-out ANPR solutions.

  • Croydon has more CCTV cameras than New York

  • 67% of burglars would be put off burgling a house that had CCTV installed, yet only 9% of the consumers have CCTV (Micromark survey of 30 burglars and 1,000 homeowners)

  • London's Metropolitan Police Force have approximately 200,000 cameras installed around the capital

  • The largest CCTV system in the World is in Australia, the New South Wales City Rail system has over 7,000 fully networked cameras!    (unless you know of bigger?)

  • Almost every bank cash machine in the country uses CCTV to record you making your transaction - bet you can't see the camera!

  • The UK has more CCTV cameras per head of population than ANY other country. About one camera for every 14 people…

  • …and about 40 times as many camcorders!

  • Home Office guidelines recommend a minimum 120% size image for identification by CCTV to be permissible in court - this means that you should provide a view (of at least) from the head to the knees to outwit the arguments of a sharp barrister.

  • So far this year the Government has granted Home Office funding to the tune of £634,000 for CCTV schemes in Kent alone (mostly Town Centre Car Parks).

  • The Government has set aside £150M for CCTV scheme funding across the country this year.

  • Harrods London store has in excess of 500 CCTV cameras installed.

  • £30M of funding for NHS CCTV schemes is soon to be fast tracked following recent unfortunate incidents in NHS hospitals.

  • Schools have recently been granted an additional £22M of funding to be spent on security.

  • Secure Engineering have been supplying and installing CCTV systems all day every day since 1988.

  • It is estimated that there are in excess of 4 million CCTV cameras in the UK, approximately 20% of the World’s total.

  • You are likely to be caught on camera 300 times a day.
